CENTRAL TERMINAL AREA ROADWAYS, UTILITIES AND GROUND TRANSPORTATION CENTER PROJECT
JOHN F. KENNEDY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (JFK)
Construction-phase and temporary works engineering for one of the nation’s largest airport redevelopments.
UrbanTech Consulting Engineering is providing specialized structural and erection engineering services in support of the JFK International Airport Central Terminal Area (CTA) Roadways, Utilities, and Ground Transportation Center Project, a major component of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s multi-billion-dollar transformation of JFK.
Working with the Skanska–Halmar JFK Joint Venture, UrbanTech supports the safe construction and staging of critical roadway infrastructure within an active airport environment.
UrbanTech’s Role
UrbanTech is responsible for professional erection engineering, temporary works design, and construction-phase structural support for a series of multi-span, continuous steel girder roadway bridges, including horizontally curved structures constructed under complex geometric, clearance, and operational constraints.
Our services include:
Erection engineering for long-span, curved steel girder bridges serving the central terminal roadway system
Crane selection, rigging design, and erection sequencing, including compliance with FAA height restrictions
Stability analysis of girders and partially erected structures under gravity and wind loads
Design of temporary works, including shoring towers, temporary foundations, bracing, bearings, and jacking systems
Crane mat design, ground bearing capacity analysis, and underground utility surcharge evaluations
Construction-phase support, including shop drawing review, RFIs, and field coordination
Supplemental & Temporary Infrastructure Solutions
To support project phasing, traffic maintenance, and accelerated construction schedules, UrbanTech also delivered fast-track structural engineering services for several temporary and supplemental facilities, including:
A temporary roadway bypass bridge constructed to maintain traffic flow and enable early demolition activities
Temporary toll plaza erection engineering, including crane planning, wind action criteria, and regulatory submissions
Temporary crossover structures designed to accommodate seasonal traffic demands and phased bridge construction
Project Impact
The JFK CTA Roadways program is a highly complex, phased construction effort requiring precise coordination between permanent structures, temporary works, and ongoing airport operations. UrbanTech’s role reflects the firm’s expertise in construction-driven structural engineering and its ability to deliver safe, efficient, and constructible solutions for large-scale transportation infrastructure.
