Garden State Parkway – Bridges 128.08A & 128.08B

Constructability Analysis
Client: Van Cleef Engineering Associates
Owner: New Jersey Turnpike Authority
Contract No.: P100.579

UrbanTech performed a comprehensive constructability analysis of the proposed superstructure and substructure improvements for Bridges 128.08A and 128.08B along the Garden State Parkway. The review was completed on behalf of Van Cleef Engineering Associates in support of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority’s Contract No. P100.579.

Bridges 128.08A and 128.08B carry three lanes of Garden State Parkway traffic along Ramps Y, GY, and GT over four separate at-grade roadways, including:

  • Route 9 Southbound

  • Route 9 Ramp M

  • Route 9 Northbound Inner

  • Route 9 Northbound Outer

An additional complexity is presented by an existing overpass carrying Route 440 traffic above the southern limits of Bridge 128.08A, further constraining construction operations.

Project Challenges

UrbanTech evaluated the proposed staging, sequencing, and structural details to identify potential construction risks and recommend practical solutions. Key challenges included:

  • Limited overhead clearance for pile driving operations due to existing and proposed superstructures

  • Restricted clearance for demolition and girder erection operations beneath the Route 440 overpass

  • Staged demolition of a highly skewed through-girder bridge

  • Staged construction of a highly skewed, two-span continuous bridge
